The Left Party’s former leader CH Hermansson has died.

He passed away during the night between Monday and Tuesday, the party announced.

– The party completely changed direction during his presidency. One can say that it was a själständigare and more modern leftist party. He laid the foundation for the modern Left. It consisted of criticizing the Soviet Union and abuse of Czechoslovakia 68 but also that he was more independent of social democracy and more open to new movements that the women’s movement and the environmental movement, says Jonas Sjöstedt and continues:

– I am fond of CH’s management style. He was soft-spoken and reasoning, yet very clear what he stood for.

Sjostedt: No politician – and the person

The two leaders left was not just political colleagues, but also friends who met often. The last meeting took place in early summer after the party’s last congress.

– I met him often, was up and had coffee at his home in his apartment in Gärdet, Sjöstedt says, and continues:

– Most of it consisted of me and Ulla Andersson took us a couple of buns up to CH and so he put the kettle on. Then we sat and talked. Often on the current policy, climate change, how it went for the refugees fleeing terror in the Middle East. But also about the story, how he modernized the party and all the battles he had to take to do it.
